This last weekend Mother Nature delivered a much needed gift in parts of California…rain! Thunder and rain, a welcoming sound and experience to be had – especially if you have a garden that can benefit from this deliverance right before the spring season!
Spring Awakening – Japanese Maple
Every season brings both aesthetic and culinary delights to the landscaper/gardener. The beauty of spring is the rebirth cycle of all your deciduous plants. Fresh new, unblemished tiny leaves and buds.
Spring Awakening – Babcock White Peach Tree
The stamens on these peach flowers are so promising. Flowers give hope to a delicious bountiful harvest! Look at the colors of these flowers and the soft fuzziness of the new flower bud growth.
Spring Awakening – Crape Myrtle
The crape myrtle boasts fall colors early on. In a couple of months it will be transformed to a hearty tree with beautiful clusters of flowers. This particular tree in the image is called the Red Rocket variety as the flower clusters are bright red.
Spring Awakening – Babcock White Peach Tree
Can you tell how enamoured I am with our peach tree? If I can only stay ahead of the other creatures and critters that love it just as much as I do so that this year I can enjoy more of its juicy and sweet fruits.
Spring Awakening – Moro Blood Orange Tree
Hubbs pruned back the Moro blood orange as we are shaping and training it for taller habit. Look at all the new leaves and growth already! The wonder of life…
Spring Awakening – Smoke Tree
The Smoke Tree (Cotinus) has magnificent color and right now it’s at its best in our garden. Our dry and hot summers ends up frying the beautiful foilage. When we are able to enjoy its beauty, it does not disappoint in its stunning deep colors.
Spring Awakening – Fig Tree
I love figs, so the awakening of the fig trees is particularly exciting. I secretly added one more small fig tree in our yard (making it three different varieties…can you blame me?).
Spring Awakening – Purple Wisteria
The purple wisteria awakens. The smallish baby leaves resemble fingers! Tiny purple, cone-looking objects erupt amongst the finger-looking leaves that will soon transform into what resembles a cluster of grapes, but are really flowers!
Spring Awakening – Fig Tree
The backside of a new baby fig leaf…and look! Two smallish figs emerge – look for those two in a future post when they’re ready to eat!

What’s this? A guest appearance from our puppy, Wiley of Corgi Tales, whose been close at my side as I photographed the reawakening of the garden. He’s wondering what in the world could be more interesting than playing tug-of-war with him this morning?
