We started out this month with cold, blustery conditions. Typical for this time of year. In only a short couple of weeks, I’m sitting here on April 1st wearing shorts in 94 degree temperatures and missing my sweaters already! I really am a cooler weather gal.
What I am welcoming are the fresh and colorful fruits and vegetables in our markets as seasonal, fresh and colorful produce are stocked and enticing. Fruit trees and other beautiful deciduous trees like Japanese Maples, Crape Myrtles, Chinese Pistaches and my Wisteria break free from months of dormancy. Their fresh, young leaves and busy birds making nests remind me of how truly beautiful life is. I hope you’ll have some time this month to enjoy a change in the weather, welcome in a new season and have plans to share the upcoming holiday with friends and family.
Upcoming Food Photography Publications
If you are interested in food photography, I’ve posted a new list of upcoming publications over on my photography-centric site, DigitalPhotology. Please be sure to check it out.
Martha Stewart’s new Pies & Tarts cookbook
I’ve added the new Martha Stewart Pies & Tarts cookbook to my library and can’t wait to start baking from it. If you’ve already started using it, I’d love to hear what you think about it.
Later this month, I’ll be sharing some testing results from yet another brand new pie book that I’m reviewing. This book has some delicious ideas and geared around a novelty pie size…can’t wait!
What Katie Ate in Martha Stewart Living this month
On the subject of Martha Stewart, if you receive or picked up the latest issue of the Martha Stewart Living magazine, did you catch the gorgeous feature and layout from Katie of “What Katie Ate“? It is not to be missed. Katie has a couple of posts about it on her blog – be sure to check it out: La Video, Quick Update & a Few Filler-in-ers.
Abroad, there are victories for some and devastation for others. Let’s take time to remember those that are struggling to rebuild and make sense of this miracle we call “life”.
March 2011 Recipe Wrap-Up |
This month I used honey in a delicious honey-mustard vinaigrette and a honey-roasted root vegetable side dish. After a strangely traveled journey to New York City and glad to be home, I woke up with chocolate on my mind and tried a Coconut Almond Joyful Muffin and then days later whipped up my new favorite cookie, Carrot Cake Cookies with Oatmeal and Macadamias.
The month sped along way to quickly for me, as I missed baking up some St. Patrick’s Day Macarons. Instead, I shared a macaron post as a guest blogger over at Georgia’s site The Comfort of Cooking. Ending this month I created a breakfast recipe using King’s Hawaiian Sweet Bread, something familiar and reminiscent of my Grandfather who used to make an identical bread in his Hawaiian bakery. |
There are many causes and woes in our World and many times it’s a challenge to contribute and feel reassured that your contributions and donations truly are delivered where intended and needed.
Did you know?
Every five seconds an innocent child dies from starvation and over 400 million children go to sleep at night hungry. The UN World Food Program (WFP) offers a nutrient-packed meal to school children in 74 countries. Pottery Barn has partnered with FEED Projects, by offering items in a FEED Lunch Collection (pictured above).
There are many more initiatives similar to Pottery Barn’s. The newest relief effort is the FEED Japan Fund. The Feed Japan Fund will aid in Japan’s Disaster relief efforts by supporting organizations on the ground in Japan. Each bag sold will give $10 to the FEED fund for Japan.
Although many of these programs offer items in return for your contribution, many times you can opt to make the donation without receiving items in return.
Take a look at the items offered and their relief missions and related links:
There are a myriad of similar projects, both here in our own country and abroad. The point is to become involved in some way by either donating funds, resources or your time.

Hi Samantha: It looks like a good organization, the Feed Project, and they make it easy to donate. =)
If you like carrot cake and/or even oatmeal cookies – that carrot cake cookie is not to be missed. Please let me know if you give it a try.

Beautiful wrap up Cristina. The Kings Hawaiian post was awesome. My favorite was the honey roasted roots. I bookmarked that one and intend on making it soon, thanks. It is wonderful to see so many helping Japan! Have a great weekend!
