I wasn’t sure if I wanted to have “secret taster” or “secret shopper” on the Teenie Cakes blog. But after some consideration – why not?
A couple of months ago I was pleasantly surprised to accidently run into CBS Cup Cakes in the University Town Center mall, located in La Jolla, California. The cupcakery is located in the food court.
It was around lunch time and I stood in front of the bakery for a few minutes marveling at how cute everything looked. After the few minutes, I thought maybe it was closed because no one came out front to greet. Eventually, a friendly representative greeted and patiently explained how to order their sweet concoctions.
You select the size cupcake, the cupcake flavor, frosting and toppings. It’s a customized built cupcake! As I had just gulped down lunch, I ordered a full sized cupcake to go with the idea of taking it home for the evening to share with my better half. I requested a large-sized chocolate cake with cream cheese frosting and graham cracker topping. The gal behind the counter reached into a plastic bin where cupcakes were stored waiting its frosting compliment. It was set in a perfect sized white box and made it home safely for evening consumption.
The cupcake was large and tastey (how can you go wrong with chocolate and cream cheese frosting!). However, it was a tad dry. Perhaps it is unavoidable that a cupcake stored in a container for any length of time would dry out. I’m sure that’s a dilema faced by all bakeries.
A very sweet and creative concept — to build your own cupcake — for sure!
